Krakow Glowny

Strolling into Krakow, Dr Zhivago style...

There's more than one way to reach the city of Prince Krak. Sure you can fly to Krakow's airport, but why not take trip that lets you enjoy the scenery along the way? Welcome to Dworzec Glowny in Krakow (often called by its shorter name: Krakow Glowny). This massive and strangely attractive relic of the Habsburg Empire welcomes hordes of visitors on a daily basis. Arriving here, you're just a short stroll from all of Krakow's gems. Or, you can just snag a taxi. If you need to find it on a map, here are the specifics:

Dworzec Glowny (pronounced dvo-zsets gwoov-nih)
Plac Dworcowy 1
Tel. : +48 (12) 624 5439

OK, OK. But how do I get there?

Polish Railways (PKP - Polskie Koleje Panstwowe) currently operates the country's railway system. The quality of the trains is decent, at best. For the nicest trains, be sure to book an InterCity (IC) or EuroCity (EC) route - both of the non-stop variety. Service, as always, is quite good and the nosh is top-notch! To see the complete timetables, just visit the PKP website: www.pkp.com.pl. Here's how long an express will take on these popular routes:

* Warsaw 2.5 hours

* Vienna 7.5 hours

* Prague 8 hours

* Berlin 8.5 hours

* Budapest 10 hours

Any more tips?

The area around the station has recently undergone massive redevelopment, and upon leaving the station guests are no longer greeted by a grotty bus depot, but a chic open space complete with a vast shopping centre to the right. If you're looking for the main bus station you can now find it the other side of the Dworzec Glowny - simply head underneath the platforms, follow the tunnel to the end and it's on your left.

If you're only in town for a few short moments or if you just can't wait to go exploring, take advantage of the station's 24 hr luggage stowaway services.

Remember: things are improving everyday and Dworzec Glowny is safe; however, it doesn't hurt to be mindful of pickpockets (that goes for the trains as well).

Sometimes a long trip can wear you out. Why not let us take care of you? We can have a taxi driver waiting for you when you arrive. Name on a board, help with luggage - the whole bit. Just click here for more info.

Happy trails and have a great time in Krakow!

reviewed by Mary from United Kingdom on Feb.03.2011

If you want to go from krakow to krosno the best way to do it is to go by bus and not by train. Forget the train option cause Krosno is a really small town and train connection is really bad. So on Krakows' main bus station (next to the train station) you can catch a bus of PKS (Public transprotation) or a Barbara minibus which will take you there much faster at the same almost cost(20-30 PLN - 5-7 EUR). With PKS you are going to spend 4-5 hours travelling while with BARBARA 2-3 h .

Dear Joan, the place you mention seems to be a really small village some 130 km from Krakow (it's not even on Google Maps; but I found it here: http://www.maplandia.com/poland/podkarpackie/mielec/schabowiec/). You would probably need to catch a train from Krakow to Dębica or Tarnobrzeg or Tarnów (especially the last of these should be relatively easy to get to), which are all relatively close from Schabowiec, and then get a taxi from there. You can check the train connection (but, unfortunately, not buy tickets) here: http://rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143. I'm sure there are buses that go there from Krakow's main bus station too, but you will need to check that when you arrive. Worst comes to worst, you can always get a taxi from Krakow straight to Schabowiec- it will probably be surprisingly cheap (I would think in the region of $100 if you haggle). Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit to Poland!

Will be using your services in September. I have a question. We have family in Ruda,Schabowiec, I undersstand it is 110Km from Krakow. Is there any type of public transportation that can get me there?

reviewed by Joan Knapp from United States on Sep.08.2010

Myself and a friend visited Krakow last September, whilst there we were advised to go by bus from the bus station to visit Auschwitz,( very emotional) which is just beside the train station.

The price was really cheap for a return ticket, we did the same going to the salt mines, but went to a different bus depot, just little buses beside the shopping mall, price was really cheap.

Going back this September with my sister this time, love my visits to Poland.

This will be my fourth time.

There is no train "station" at the Krakow airport. The free shuttle bus from the airport drops you at a train stop by the train tracks about 300 meters from the airport. The fare was 6 zl on 4 October 2008. Pay the conductor after you board. You'll need zlotys but not the exact fare. The conductor will make change.

Go to the PKP website (see the other posting for the English link) and just search for trains between Warsaw and Krakow. It is very easy to use and tells you the prices. Try also
http://www.intercity.pl/?page=home_page
I travelled Warsaw to Krakow and back and just turned up at the station and bought a ticket and reservation. The trains are much cheaper and have a simpler pricing structure than in the UK.
There is a public bus from Warsaw airport which goes directly to the main railway station.
Główny is the Polish word for main so look out for that word for the central railway station when you do a search e.g. Krakow Główny.
PKP - Polish railways - have been very helpful to me and will answer in English
Try infokraj@intercity.pl
