The Krakow Film Festival

The oldest film festival in Poland, the Krakow Film Festival has been an annual event in the city's calendar since as far back as 1961. Comprised of the Krakow Short Film Festival - one of Europe's oldest festivals dedicated to documentary, animation and other short film forms - and the international competition, the Krakow Film Festival ranks as one of the choicest celluloid celebrations in Europe, every year drawing legions of film fans to the city.

Aspiring directors compete for the coveted Golden Dragons, and dozens of glittering names have taken part in the festival over the years (Krzysztof Kieslowski, Werner Herzog, Pier Paulo Pasolini amongst others).

The 2010 festival is being touted as the 50th anniversary event. Filmmaker Jonas Mekas is one of the featured participants. Over seven days, the festival will screen about 250 titles from Poland and abroad. As well as offering a wide range of films, a particularly strong segment is the documentary group. Once again, screenings will take place at Kijow Centrum, Kino Pod Baranami, Mikro Cinema, ARS cinemas, with workshops and meetings at these theatres and the International Cultural Centre. Tickets are 10 PLN before 5 p.m. and 12 PLN after. Full, partial or daily festival passes can be bought as well. For a complete schedule of screenings, locations and pass information, please see the festival's official website: Krakow Film Festival
