Poles Deny CIA Camps
The European Union has accepted the denials from both Poland and Romania that no such secret U.S. prisons exist in their countries.
A recent report from the Human Rights Watch group and the Washington Post indicated that the Central Intelligence Agency has operated covert interrogation centres in Poland and Romania, as well as Thailand and Afghanistan.
"The statements by both the Romanians and the Polish authorities are crystal clear,'' European Commission spokesman Friso Roscam Abbing said during a news conference in Brussels.
"At this point in time, we do not have any suspicion of anything else going on.''
Poland, as one of the new countries that joined the union in May of last year, is required to uphold the European convention on human rights. The same standards apply to Romania, which is seeking to join the now 25-nation bloc in 2007. The European Commission also called for the investigation of the said reports.
