Polish Goalie Stays In Scotland

Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc signed a 3-1/2-half year contract Monday to stay at Celtic through 2009.

The 25-year-old Boruc, who joined Celtic this summer on loan from Polish club Legia Warsaw, also has an option in his contract for an extra year.

"Right now I'm very happy," Boruc said. "I'm making progress but, hopefully, I will be a better goalkeeper after a few months."

Boruc's impressive early season form had reportedly interested Arsenal and Fulham, but Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said the Pole was never going to leave.

"It doesn't make a difference whether it was Arsenal or Juventus who were interested in him, we were blinkered and wanted Artur here," Strachan said. "We were in pole position. We brought Artur to the club and, once he was here, we knew he would like it and it has worked out that way."

Boruc became Celtic's No. 1 goalkeeper in August after David Marshall conceded nine goals in his first two games, against Artmedia Bratislava and Motherwell.

"The good thing is David is there and Artur knows he has to be at his best to keep his position," Strachan said.
