A colossal poster has been unfurled from the roof of the Archbishop's Palace. It's a fairly standard portrait of Pope John Paul II, who lived in this building for many years.
The late pontiff made several warmly remembered speeches from the window above the main entrance, and fresh flowers have continued to be placed there every day following his death this April.
If you walk a little closer to the poster, it suddenly becomes apparent that the 40 foot high image is in fact composed of thousands of passport sized photographs. 'Thank you John Paul' reads the dedication at the top.
These cheerful faces from around the world are actually members of the Catholic Youth Association who came to Cracow for a special meeting some years ago, a small fraction of the millions worldwide who were inspired by Pope John Paul. The sometime Archbishop of Cracow was known as 'Uncle' here in Poland's former Royal capital. His death earlier this year saw an extraordinary outbreak of emotion across the country.
A special tribute concert by Sinfonietta Cracovia will be held at the Church of St Peter and St Paul this Sunday at 7pm (16th October). On that day 27 years ago, Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope - he was the first non-Italian pontiff in over 400 years. | Source: NH | Oct.14.2005 |
