4th National Art Competition for Manual Therapy Workshops 2005.
September 4 – October 9, 2005
The International Cultural Centre's new Autumn exhibition is a presentation of work produced by disabled people at art classes in manual therapy workshops. The works displayed will be selected in a competition organised by the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled open to more than 600 workshops all over the country.
People who attend such workshops - for whom their artistic activities are one aspect of the complex process of rehabilitation - are free to express themselves through painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and fabrics.
The variety of techniques, the lack of restrictions on the way they are used, and the freedom from routine are the sources of the originality of expression in this artwork. The capacity for perceptive observation that they demonstrate reveals a great sensitivity to the reality surrounding their creators. The shapes, forms and colours that this reality inspires, processed by the imagination of the artists, take on unique qualities. The works are often astonishingly accomplished, sometimes charmingly clumsy. They are frequently remarkable in the passionate will that they demonstrate for experimentation and quest for forms of artistic expression.
Public presentations of this type of creative work not only draw attention to the difficult and complex situation of disabled people, but are also intended as a gesture of social acceptance and support for them. They attempt to articulate the unquestionable right to equal opportunities for all, the right of every human being to respect for their individuality, irrespective of their physical and mental condition. Artistic activity is for disabled people a way of unlocking belief in their own strength, a form of dialogue with the world, a world that can often seem alien and is not always benevolent.
This exhibition, organised in co-operation with the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, is the second presentation of this kind of art that the International Cultural Centre has hosted.
