Celluloid Surprises

Visitors may have noticed some peculiar automobiles parked around town over the last few days.... vehicles of a distinctly military variety. However, Cracow is not on the brink of civil war just yet- the tanks in question are in fact props for the new CBS miniseries about Pope John Pope II.

Filming has just begun on this lavish production, and a number of scenes relating to Cracow's wartime occupation are already in the can.

Ian Holm of 'Lord of the Rings' fame (also 'Chariots of Fire', a much more amusing film) has stepped down from the lead role for personal reasons. He will be replaced by Jon Voight.

There has been something of a rush to translate John Paul II's life into celluloid in recent times. A major Italian production was released earlier this year, whilst Mel Gibson has a major blockbuster in the pipeline.
