The Great Pierogi Festival!
Well, last year it changed its location three times before finally setting up shop on the Main Market Square, so there may well be some last minute changes. At the moment the event is billed for the Maly Rynek (Small Market Square) just behind St. Mary's Chruch. However, you can rest assured that the dumplings are coming to town, so if you've never tried a 'pierog' before, now is the time.
But just what is a pierog? Often misconstrued as Polish ravioli, the pierog is in fact a very different beast. A pierog is a small crescent-shaped dough pouch. It comes in sweet or savoury varieties, some of the most popular being 'pierogi ruskie' (cottage cheese, potato and onion) and 'z miesem' with meat. A plate of pierogi is considered the homeliest of homely Polish dishes, and Poles will wax lyrical about them like Frenchmen rhapsodizing about fine cheese. Are they actually any good? Now's your chance to find out...
