Sphinx Cursed By Fire
The source of yesterday's fire on the Main Market Square has been pin-pointed to the Sphinx restaurant, which occupies the ground floor of the so-called 'Prince's House' at no. 26.
The fire tore up through the chimney and engulfed the roof of that mansion in flames. Such was the intensity of the blaze that it took fireman several hours to bring the situation under control.
Thankfully there were no physical injuries in the fire, but aerial photographs reveal the material damage to be considerable.
Flabbergasted onlookers crowded the square yesterday afternoon as the roof of the mantion erupted in flames. It was one of the hottest days of the year.
The Sphinx restaurant has now emerged as the sorry culprit in the affair. A worker at the restaurant told Polish Daily 'Dziennik Polski' of his shock discovery in the kitchen:
'At first it was just a little flame, and then suddenly it erupted like a furnace,' he said.
Cooking oil was the probable catalyst, although how the fire managed to get so out of control is unclear.
The premises are currently fenced off until the immediate whereabouts are safe for passers by on the corner below.
