Nowa Huta, traditionally the city’s least celebrated area, will be a hive of activity from the 26th of August to the 4th of September. Celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the formation of Solidarnosc will kick off proceedings with a ballet by Ardente Sole entitled “Alla Polacca – droga do wolnosci (the road to freedom)”. The following evening will witness the performance of an outdoor play based on the poems and literature of Zbigniew Herbert, titled “Zapis”.
Solidarnosc was founded in 1980 as a trade union and, through non-violent protest and collaboration with other social movements, it played a major role in the dismantling of communism in Poland. Much of Cracow’s resistance to the communist regime began in Nowa Huta so it is fitting that the second annual Nowa Huta Film Marathon will also focus on the role of Solidarnosc in the fight for revolution. A photo gallery will be opened detailing the area’s resistance to communism, and several documentaries – including “Kierunek Nowa Huta (towards Nowa Huta)” will be shown as part of the marathon. Further details on these and more events can be found at www.nowahuta.org.pl
