Poland celebrates Stork Day today. The arrival of these long-legged fellows each Spring is a cherished event in Poland.

Storks are recurrent characters in Polish literature and according to current estimates there are approximately 49 thousand stork couples in Poland, which is about one fourth of the world's population.

Storks come to Poland in April to breed, but they spend their winters in Africa. Here in Poland they build their nests on the roofs of country houses and on telephone poles. It goes without saying that storks herald the arrival of healthy, bouncing babies so their nests are always protected by the owners of houses.

A year ago National Geographic made a survey and it emerged that the stork was the animal which Poles most related to their national identity.
