Juvenalia Returns!
If you're around town, you'll have noticed that the madness has begun. Only on one day of the year will you find queues so long at the liquor stores that they actually snake out into the streets. The fact that the punters who are queueing for liquid refreshment are dressed as cavemen, super-heroes, witches and wizards signals that these are not just ordinary citizens in need of a quick pick-me-up on their lunch-break. No - Juvenalia has begun. And if you are a gallant wayfarer who have just arrived in the city, we'll explain it all without further ado.
According to an ancient and venerable tradition, the students are handed the keys to the city for a brief yet decidedly bonkers romp one day each May. It's been going on for centuries, and the Cracovians are quite used to all these shenanigans. Juvenalia is good news for beer and fancy-dress sellers, but not so good news for street sweepers.
If you're hoping to see the Main Market Square in a more majestic light then never fear. The concerts will wind up today and life will return to normal.... that is until next year, when the whole mad carnival will begin again. Hurrah!
