The Italian daily Corriere della Sera writes that Pope John Paul II may already be beatified by October in the first stage towards becoming a Roman Catholic saint.
The daily explains that the cardinals, who attended the Pope’s funeral, are under the impression of appeals from the faithful who chanted “sainthood now”.
Polish-born archbishop Edward Nowak, secretary of the Vatican office in charge of canonisation issues, said that it is a long enough period of time to gather evidence.
Archbishop Nowak confirmed that reports on miraculous healing attributed to the Pope keep flowing to the Vatican. He said that the new Pope may decide to shorten the canonisation procedure, which usually can begin five years after the candidate’s death.
