Fears for the Pope's health deepened this morning with the news that the Pontiff had suffered a heart failure yesterday afternoon.
The news was felt acutely in Cracow, where the Pope served for many years as Archbishop. Although the pontiff was born in Wadowice, a small town to the south of the city, Cracovians count the Pope as one of their own. He attended university in Cracow, and he served the Church for thirty years here before being elected to the Papacy in October 1978.
This morning Cracow's churches were filled with people offering prayers for the health of the waning pontiff. The Poles' affection for their Pope runs deep. The Church was considered as the shepherd of the nation during the long communist era, and the Pope's reputation is that of a saint.
