Polish Premier On Choppy Waters

This morning Parliament is to vote over a motion submitted by the Polish Families League (LPR) which calls on Prime Minister Marek Belka to resign.

At around the same time, Belka will go to the Stefan Batory Foundation to make a speech entitled "The Future of the Polish State" during which he will "make an important political announcement." Yesterday, Belka avoided the media to clarify his intentions stated in an interview for weekly Polityka. There is widespread media speculation that he might leave the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) and join the recently formed Democratic Party (PD). However, what is certain is that he has been stressing that a general election will be held on June 19 and not in the autumn, which is in conflict with the wishes of the SLD. The SLD will vote against the LPR motion, which Krzysztof Janik called "anti-constitutional". The SLD is desperately clinging onto power and is now applying scare tactics: "If you force early elections, you will have to bear the responsibility of the potential failure of the Euro constitution in Poland," said an anonymous SLD member. According to a recent poll 86% of the public evaluates the current government's activities as bad. However public trust in Belka rose from 28% in April 2004 to 44% a few days ago.
