'Mirror, mirror on the wall, who bakes the finest Szarlotka of them all?" It's a serious question, and one that you've no doubt asked yourselves many times on a snowy winter's morning such as today.
O.K, so maybe you haven't become a cakeaholic just yet. And if you're new to the cake-crazed country that is Poland, you might be wondering just what a szarlotka is (pronounced. Shar - Lot - Car).
Well, the szarlotka is a special kind of apple-pie, and Poles love the stuff. If you want to be a hero for the day with your Polish friends, buy them a round of szarlotkas. It would be something akin to handing a group of Frenchman a basket of sensational camembert cheeses.
As it goes, there are more cake-shops in Cracow than there are pigeons, a factor which can make life rather tricky for those with a bit of a cake habit. On the other hand, if there's a cake shop on every corner, how does the uninitiated adventurer know how to sort the wheat from the chaff?
Well never fear, as Cracow Life has made a ground-breaking discovery over the weekend. After years of earnest research, we finally stumbled upon a certain establishment which wins hands down in the Szarlotka stakes.
The establishment in question has just changed it's chef, and their new star has blazed a trail through Cracow's cake galaxy. So drum-roll please, the cat's out the bag, Hawelka bakes the finest of them all!
( In this light let's hope that a jealous cake-shop owner doesn't send a mad-woodcutter down to exterminate the
lady at Hawelka....... O.K, enough Snow White references, many apologies, please excuse our derangement, it's Monday Morning and we're trying to get ourselves together.)
