The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) National Council decided on Monday that the general election should take place in the fall, in accordance with the constitutional demand that an election be held every four years.
Most left wing politicians decided that it lays in the interest of the SLD as well as the people who voted for the party, and those who fear radical changes being planned by the right wing parties. Among the 100 members of the National Council who took part in the vote, only 22 wanted a shortened term of office. SLD deputy leader Jerzy Szmajdziski admitted that elections in June are a good idea, but fall is a much better time. His words were supported by former Prime Minister Leszek Miller who tried to prove that the party has to have time to win the support of the public again before a general election.
