Worshippers in the southern Polish town of Wadowice, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, were praying Wednesday for his recovery after the pontiff was rushed to hospital with breathing problems, the parish priest said.
"We are praying and are confident that God will help him," Father Jakub Gil told AFP.
"A lot of people came to church today. We are reassuring them on his state of health. He is suffering from a flu that a lot of people here have also fallen ill with."
Polish newspapers on Wednesday were all running front-page stories on the pope's hospitalisation late Tuesday.
The wide-circulation daily Fakt urged readers to pray for his recovery.
"Pray for him! The Holy Father really needs our prayers today," the paper said alongside a picture of the pope.
The pope was born Karol Joseph Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920.
