Poles heartily confess that they're fond of the odd beer or ten - it's very much part of the culture. And if we stray into politically incorrect territory, one might hold that the Pole who would turn down a drink would be like the Frenchman who would turn down a spot of rumpy pumpy. In short, very rare.
An incident that has been in the papers this week will undoubtedly serve to perpetuate the stereotype. Established weekly 'The Warsaw Voice' reported a curious burglary in the sleepy southern town of Ustrzyk.
Having broken into a restaurant and loaded himself up with swag, an intruder decided that a quick drink to celebrate was only fair - such finely stocked bars are indeed something of a bounty in themselves.
Several hours later the police found the uninvited guest slumped on the floor, completely sozzled. Reports reveal that the man was delighted to meet the police, as finally someone could help him to stand up.
