New Year Smash!

Some 170,000 revellers descended on Cracow's Rynek (Main Market Square) for the New Year celebrations, making the event Poland's largest open-air party.

A handful of the country's most popular bands brought in the New Year on a specially built stage, including rock stars Wilki (Wolves) and folk fusion smash Golec uOrkiestra.

It was a fine night for Cracow's sausage sellers, not to mention the city's liquor store owners, who could barely keep up with the demand. Taxi drivers reported the busiest New Year ever.

A record number of foreigners chose Cracow as their New Year destination this time round, with English, French and Italians prominent alongside many other nationalities. These unsuspecting guests were treated to the annual smashing of the champagne bottles ritual, which is considered to be a sign of good luck.

After the crowds had dispersed a sea of green glass was revealed on the Market Square, all trace of which had disappeared by the time most Cracovians ventured out of bed the following day. It was a clean up operation of epic proportions, seemingly effortlessly pulled off. All in all a night to remember (and a morning to forget...)
