Forgotten Manuscripts Return

The Czech Republic will return 33 priceless Hebrew manuscripts stolen by the Nazis during World War II to the Jewish Theologic Seminary in Wroclaw, Poland, an official said Thursday.

Government spokesman Jindrich Marek said the Czech government agreed late Wednesday to return to Poland the 33 manuscripts and six old books - some of them dating back to the 13th century - possessed by the Czech National Library.

The volumes were taken to the library in Prague during World War II, when the library was managed by the Nazis, and put in a safe, where they remained unnoticed until the mid-1980s.
