It's hero time...

Could next year’s European championships be Poland’s chance to shine on the world football stage? The draw for Euro 2012 has not been overly kind to the White Eagles, pitting them against Russia, Greece and the Czech Republic for their first round matches. However, Poland will have the advantage of a home crowd for all of the games, to be played in Wrocław and Warsaw. And, although Russia has been a formidable force of late, and Greece and the Czech Republic have both put in respectable performances in recent European champions, none of them are clear-cut giants. It’s been a long time since Poland tasted any kind of international football glory. The 1970s and 1980s saw them take third place in World Cup finals, but this is only the second time that they have qualified for the European competition. Back in 2008 they didn’t get out of the group stage, and failed to win a game. Will 2012 be different? The picture will be clearer when Poland’s first match, against Greece on June 8, kicks off.
