Feeling festive

It may appear somewhat more modest than in previous years, but Krakow’s Christmas market has opened on the main square. Shoppers can pick up hand-crafted gifts, clothes, jewellery, toys and more on the stalls, or simply browse the market and enjoy a glass of hot, spiced wine and some of Krakow’s culinary specialities. There’s even a temporary post office, so there’s no excuse not to send cards home to friends and family. The municipal Christmas tree is in place too, to help locals and tourists get into the festive spirit, and on December 1 there will be a display of hand-made Christmas cribs. These cribs – szopki – are a Krakow tradition but have made their way around the globe; in fact, the tiny English town of Buxton is holding its own szopki event this year, after taking inspiration directly from Krakow.
