Tents, science and poetry
A sea of white tents has risen around Krakow, as the city marks two major festivals.
Wander into Plac Szczepanski to catch the centerpiece of the city’s celebration of the life of the Nobel Prize winning writer Czesław Miłosz.
His output was prolific, including poetry, philosophy, literary criticism, and more. He spent a large part of his adult life overseas, living first in Paris and later as an exile in the USA. Although he was born in what is now Lithuania, Miłosz never forgot his Polish roots and returned to Krakow in 1989. He died in August 2004, and is buried among Poland’s other heroes at the Skałka church next to the river Wisła.
Alongside the arts, Krakow is celebrating the spirit of invention and discovery during the tenth annual festival of science. The tents on the main square will host exhibitions, concerts, multimedia and ‘science spectaculars.'
