Schindler Factory Set To Open
After much deliberation, and several years in the making, a permanent exhibition will open this week in Oskar Schindler's former enamelware factory.
"Krakow during the Occupation: 1939-1945" is being billed as a state of the art experience that will transport visitors back to the traumatic era of Nazi rule.
Guests will walk through a series of labyrinthine halls, arranged chronologically so as to echo the destiny of the city during those years.
The sights, sounds and even smells of that era will be evoked in the exhibition, aided by archival photographs and film footage.
"The city completely changed its character following the years 1939-1945," said director of the city's historical Museum, Michal Niezabitowski, in an interview with the Krakow Post.
"Almost 30 percent of the inhabitants of the city - those who were Jewish - disappeared, and in all probability, they disappeared forever. We came through a traumatic experience - one which has had a strong impact on our history."
The new exhibition will open to the public on Friday 11th June. The former Schindler Factory can be found at ul. Lipowa, south of the river in Zablocie.
