Film Fest Prepares to Fire
The 50th Krakow Film Festival is upon us, and cinephiles will be able to take their pick from a staggering 250 celluloid slices.
Poland's oldest film festival has helped kickstart the careers of such celebrated directors as Werner Herzog, Patrice Leconte, Jan Sverak and Krzysztof Kieslowski. This being a jubilee year, the organisers have pulled out all the stops to ensure that it's an occasion to remember.
As always the competition categories are documentary, short film and animation. There's also a Dragon of Dragons award for lifetime achievement, this year going to American avant-garde ace Jonas Mekas. There's much more besides, including forays in the world of reggae, and retrospectives of some of the highlights of the last half-century.
The lion's share of the action will be divided between Kijow Centrum, Kino Pod Baranami and Kino Mikro. Drop into any of those for a full programme, or root out the cultural information office just off the square at ul. sw. Jana 2.
