Russian Crush on Cracow

The recent funeral for Poland's president may have resulted in some positive vibes for Cracow. Polls in Russia show Russians want to come to Poland, and particularly Krakow, after seeing the city and hearing about the tragic story of Katyn. One travel operator in St. Petersburg reports 20 calls about flights to Poland just last week.

The usual frosty relations between the ex-Soviet nation and its one-time satellite appear be thawing given the recent crash of the plane with President Lech Kaczynski and 95 other people 10th April near Smolensk. For years, Soviet, then Russian authorities suppressed the truth about Katyn, the World War II massacre of 22,000 Polish prisoners of war in western Russia by the Soviet secret police. Since 10th April, Russia has aired the film "Katyn", prompting a re-think of Polish-Russian relations.

The events of history cannot be undone, and yet it has taken a tragic recent event to bring two old protanganists closer. Perhaps it's true, There is a silver lining in every cloud, however dark that cloud may be.
