Krakow played its part in notching up over 30 million zloty for charity last weekend. The annual Great Orchestra for Christmas Charity, the largest fund-raising event of the year, saw tens of thousands brave the bitter cold to attend open-air concerts and spectacles across Poland. Punters and performers alike sported the heart-shaped stickers that have become the symbols of the event.
In Krakow, the stage on the Main Market Square saw gigs by Anna Gogola, Wu-Hae and Bang Bang Blues, as well as scenes from Red Riding Hood performed by acclaimed puppet theatre Groteska.
Over 120,000 volunteers took part in the fund-raising, and this year the organisation managed to draw further interest from countries beyond Poland's borders such as Canada, Iceland, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The 2010 edition was aimed at helping children with cancer.
