Squaring up for New Year In Cracow

As always, thousands will be descending on Cracow for some New Year revelry. In Poland, the toasting often starts around lunchtime, and you can guarantee that those still capable of movement will be mightily merry come midnight.

The focus of action will be the Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny), where a stage will boom out some beefy, celebratory sounds, courtesy of top name Djs and bands. This year, rock siren Agnieszka Chylinska will be topping the bill, with back-up from Djs Raul Rincon, Krime and ADHD.

If you're after something a little more gentle, try and book restaurant tables well in advance. Some of the snazzier establishments will have a set menu - often quite pricey - so it's worth taking the time to find something that suits you.

As for the outdoor action, foreigners should bear in mind the crazy custom of smashing champagne bottles, which is considered a sign of good luck. Yes, a suit medieval armour helps. Enjoy!
