Police find Auschwitz sign, arrest 5

After a weekend of searching, police have recovered the iconic sign stolen last week from the gates to Auschwitz I, and have arrested five people on charges related to the theft.

A six-figure reward had been offered for information about the location and who stole the sign, bearing the phrase "Arbiet Macht Frei" (Work Makes You Free).

Human rights groups, survivors of the Nazi death camp and world leaders had called for an intense effort to find the sign and arrest the perpetrators. Material effects of the camps are seen as authentic and "silent" witnesses to their history. Poland had tightened its borders and issued an all-out search notice for the sign, which will be returned to the museum as soon as possible.
