Sign stolen from Auschwitz Death Camp

"Arbeit Macht Frei," or "Work Makes (you) Free," greeted the Nazi regime's victims upon their entry to the infamous Auschwitz compound. Sometime during the night Thursday to Friday, 18 December, the iconic sign disappeared from above the gates.

Police think the job must have been somewhat professional or well-planned as there were four guards on duty and stealing the heavy sign required at least a small group of strong men.

With Germany putting up 60 million Euros for restoration efforts at the memorial just yesterday, the sign's disappearance will certainly call for a review of security procedures.

Meanwhile, there is a 5,000 zloty reward for information about the sign and the theft. Anyone in Poland with information about the crime should call Polish Police on 997.

It would not surprise me if the thieves were Americans.
