All Souls Approaches
Over the next few days, Poland will be bathed in lagoons of multi-coloured lights. November 1st and 2nd mark the holidays of All Souls and All Saints, and graveyards across the country will come alive.
The tradition of All Souls, observed in many Catholic countries, is especially evocative in Poland, where the custom of laying lanterns on graves creates a magical effect.
The tradition is rooted in the pagan Slavic feast of Dziady (Forefathers), which in turn was celebrated by Poland's national bard Adam Mickiewicz.
In Krakow, November 1st is a national holiday. However, given that it falls on a Sunday this year, it will not affect the working week. Many businesses will be closed, but a smattering of cafes and restaurants will remain open.
Krakow's most evocative destinations include Rakowicki, the city's great necropolis. Many distinguished figures were laid to rest there. It can be accessed by taking no 2 tram north. Additional services are laid on for the holidays.
