Poles Back Polanski

Polish Defence Minister Radek Sikorski will be making a joint appeal for clemency with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner regarding the arrest of film-maker Roman Polanski.

The director, who spent much of his youth in Cracow, was detained in Switzerland on September 26th on his way to receive an award for his lifetime achievement in film.

Polanski could be deported to the U.S. for absconding justice over a charge of unlawful sex with a minor in 1978. The director fled the States before the case was concluded, and he has not set foot on American soil since then.

Polanski has lived in France since 1979, but Switzerland's laws regarding deportation are more cooperative with the U.S.

The woman central to the case, who was 13 when the incident took place, has spoken out several times in recent years, calling for the extradition order to be cancelled.
