Art Deco Delights
The National Museum is preparing for one of its biggest shows of the year - a groundbreaking retrospective of Zofia Stryjenska.
Born in 1891, Stryjenska won fame at Paris's International exhibition (1925), where she scooped a string of Grand Prix awards.
Although derided by some Polish critics as a second rate graphic artist, her distinctive style was hugely influential, with its exuberant blend of art deco and folk motifs.
After the war, Stryjenska was alienated from the mainstream as she refused to join the communist governments Union of Polish Artists.
However, since the fall of the Iron Curtain, there has been renewed interest in Art Deco, and the forthcoming show will be the first major retropective of Stryjenska's art. Besides paintings and posters, the show will include book designs, stage sets and illustrations.
"Zofia Stryjenska (1891-1976)" runs from 24th October to 4th January
