A state funeral was held on Monday in Warsaw for Bronislaw Geremek, one of the leading lights of the Solidarity era.

Mr. Geremek was killed on July 13th when his car collided with a van in Western Poland. He was 76.

The former foreign minister had been an active member of the European Parliament of late, following his election to the assemby in 2004.

Following the funeral service at St. John's Cathedral, which was attended by many Polish and international dignitaries, Mr. Geremek was laid to rest in the historic cemetery of Powazki.
