Talking Trams

The future may well be a place where dull, robotic voices accost us on every corner. But travellers on the No. 8 tram this week will find some refreshingly romantic vocals on loop.

"The next stop," purrs the mysterious lady, "Wawel.....". It's as if Queen Guinevere herself was inviting Sir Lancelot for dinner. Schoolchildren seemed transfixed by the voice when Cracow Life hopped on the tram this morning - youngsters mimicked the recordings all the way into town.

As it goes, the royal associations aren't too far off the mark, as the voice belongs to Anna Dymna, one of Cracow's most distinguished actresses. Mrs Dymna, of Polish Armenian descent, played the beautiful Queen Barbara Radziwillowna in Janusz Majewski's celebrated eighties film.

That said, whilst the velvety vocals may provide a pleasant change to the normal robotic recordings, an earnest message is behind the campaign. Mrs Dymna is raising awareness for her charity 'Against the Odds', which helps disabled people across Poland. Poles are entitled to pay 1% of their tax to a charity of their choice, and several celebrities are getting involved in promoting this fact.
