Up until 2006, three of Cracow's most picturesque plazas were daily insulted by herds of cars. But these uncouth automobiles are now on the run.
The first big change came on Ulica Szeroka in Kazimierz, whilst last year it was the turn of the Maly Rynek (Little Market Square). Yesterday, Dziennik Polski announced that the third and final listed car park is about to be liquidated. Huzzah!
Plac Szczepanski has long been a rather odd place, solely because the entire square has been fenced off as a colossal car park. Located just a hundred yards from the Main Market Square, it boasts some of the most beautiful fin-de-siecle buildings in Cracow, namely Palac Sztuki and Teatry Stary.
But plans are now underfoot to boot out those mischievous cars. The city has announced a competition to bring out the best in the square. The idea is to enhance the art nouveau era character of the plaza, with fountains, benches and other architectural elements. The city is asking for all projects to be submitted by the end of July.
