Travellers planning a trip to Auschwitz next week may be intrigued by a one-off event that's being hosted this coming Wednesday (April 16th, 8pm).
The newly opened Auschwitz Jewish Center will be commemorating the deportations of Jews from the district in April 1943. Candles will be lit outside the town synagogue and documentary films will be shown at the Centre, followed by readings of memoirs of former residents.
The town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz during the German Occupation) has a long history that stretches back to the 11th century. Jews lived there for over five hundred years, and on the eve of World War II, about 8,000 Jews inhabited the town. In April 1941, almost all were deported to ghettos in Bedzin, Chorzow and Sosnowiec. Many perished later in the camps.
If you would like to find out more about Wednesday's anniversary, which is largely being conducted in Polish, please feel free to email the center.
