Palm trees were few and far between in medieval Poland, but that didn't stop locals from knocking off their own versions. When Easter draws near, town squares are festooned with these totem-like creations.
At the village of Lipnica Murowana there's a much cherished competition in which skilled folk strive to outdo each other in building the tallest palm. Last Sunday one Zbigniew Urbanski smashed the record with a mighty 33.39 metres - not the easiest thing to hoist. Here's the proud winner getting his dues.
With Holy Week underway in Krakow, there's much to savour. The
Misteria Paschalia Festival has kicked off, whilst on Saturday, it's well worth popping into one of the city's many churches to witness the tradition of 'Swiecone.' Curious travellers can find out more by clicking on the link about Easter traditions.
