In The Footsteps Of The Fallen
This month marks the 65th anniversary of the liquidation of the Cracow Ghetto. On Sunday morning there will be a march of remembrance in tribute to the victims.
The Nazi action began on March 13th, 1943. Two years previously, in March 1941, Hitler's regime had forced thousands of Jews into a ghetto in the Podgorze district.
After the clearance of the ghetto, Jews were marched to the Plaszow forced labour camp, a mile south of Cracow. Only about 10% of the region's Jewish population survived the war. Many perished at Plaszow and at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps.
The march of remembrance is an annual event, but this time, a handful of emigre survivors will join the procession. The walk begins at midday on Sunday 16th at the Pharmacy Under The Eagle on Plac Bohaterow Getta.
One of the survivors of the ghetto, Janina Fischler-Martinho, will be giving a talk about her experiences on Thursday, 13th March at the Galicia Museum.
