If the Christmas market hasn't managed to get you in the holiday spirit, this Thursday Christmas is hitting Krakow full-force. First, traditionally the first Thursday of December is the "szopki" competition, or the contest to see who can create the most beautiful and original nativity scene. The contestants place their offerings on the base of the Adam Mickiewicz statue on the Market Square, where they are viewable for just two hours between 10 am and noon. At noon they are taken to the Krakow History Museum where they are judged and displayed on the 9th and 10th, with the winners announced a few days after the competition.
But while the szopki competition is an essential part of traditional Cracovian culture, sometimes the holiday season should be about having fun as well. This Thursday also brings the opening of Krakow's first outdoor ice skating rink in the Old Town. The rink is sponsored by the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre, and will be located in the large square facing the shopping centre and the Dworzec Glowny train station. If you miss the rink's opening on the 6th, fear not, for it is expected to remain in operation through February if the cold weather holds - and knowing Poland, it's nearly certain that it will! | Source: Cracow Life | Dec.05.2007 |
