Poland's most highbrow newspaper, Rzeczpospolita, published today a golden list of the seven wonders of Poland.
82,000 voters made their mark on the survey, which was conducted over the internet on the newspaper's portal. Echoing the original seven wonders of the classical world, prospective winners had to be architectural, so marvels such as the Tatra mountains were out of the running. But enough blurb. Without further ado, here are the results:
1) The Salt Mines of Wieliczka - Miraculous medieval mines near Krakow
2) The Old Town of Torun - UNESCO listed town and birthplace of Copernicus
3) Malbork Castle - Gargantuan headquarters of the Teutonic Knights
4) Wawel Castle, Krakow - Erstwhile seat of Poland's monarchs
5) The Elblag Kanal - 80 kilometre long canal in Western Poland
6) Zamosc - Ideal Renaissance town in Southeast Poland
7) Krakow's Rynek - Market square of the former medieval capital
So... do you agree with the above list?! Should anything else be there? Czestochowa perhaps? And what about the wooden churches of Malopolska - a clutch of those are already listed by UNESCO. Or, dare we say it, Nowa Huta? Does anything built after 1945 merit an acknowledgment, or is it all a poisonous legacy? Please feel free to add your comments!
