A lone bison emerged from the Bialowieza Forest in northeast Poland on Thursday and proceeded to wreak havoc in a number of villages. The cantankerous beast, one of about a thousand in the region, lobbed a lady into the air and fought with cows in a village pasture. After each skirmish, the bison promptly ran back into the forest.
It is understood that the animal escaped from a protected reserve where about 1000 bison abide as a protected species. The alarm was raised on Thursday, when the bison was spotted in the village of Michocze, some fifty miles from the reserve.
The bison's first foray entailed the destruction of fencing and the subsequent consumption of a large number of vegetables on villagers patches. After a lady was shunted into the air the following day, armed policeman and veterinarians were put on peak alert.
Bialowieza is Europe's last surviving primeval forest. However, the fabled bison were all but extinguished during the second world war when hungry troops entrapped the beasts. In 1951, specimens from zoos had to be hauled in to get the balance back to normal. About 3000 bison survive in Eastern Europe today.
