Malopolska. Photographs. Unclarified.
(Malopolska Instytut Kultury)
Coffee table books about Cracow and Poland have been multiplying at a rate of knots of late. But although the general standard is decent, it's rare that something original comes along. Enter Malopolska. Photographs. Unclarified., a fantastic new album by fifteen young (ish) photographers from the region.
This project may have been financed by the Malopolska Cultural Institute, but chocolate box pictures of castles are few and far between. Indeed, the handful of images of palaces (finely captured by Weronika Lodzinska) is largely intended to reveal the dramatic fall of such buildings, rather than to promote the charms of the survivors. Yet although this is not a conventional souvenir album, the book brings the Malopolska region to life in a vibrant, witty, often otherworldly way that runs rings round the run-of-the-mill album fare. Readers can savour Polish Red Indians, Dachshund Parades, beauty queens and even Captain Caveman with club in hand. The album is on display now at Hetmanska (Main Square 17) and it should soon find its way to other bookshops across Cracow. For a taster, click on the ZDJECIA section on the link below:
