39th Cracow Organ Festival
The 39th Cracow Organ Festival continues today with a recital at the charming gothic church of the Holy Cross.
The much-loved festival provides a marvellous opportunity to savour some magnificent music in inspiring surroundings.
Even by the close of the 16th century chroniclers were referring to Cracow as a 'second Rome', such was its popularity as a pilgrimage destination. The rich number of beautiful churches in the city, many wonderfully adorned, provides an enthralling record of that legacy. A smattering of the finest will be hosting one-off recitals this week, with distinguished guests from across Europe taking part.
Tonight's concert will be held on the recently restored organ at the medieval church of the Holy Cross (ul. sw. Krzyza 23). The church is remarkable for its spectacular vault, an exotic confection that resembles a palm tree. The church is also adorned with some fine frescoes by the star of Poland's fin-de-siecle, Stanislaw Wyspianski.
