A hundred years ago this week, one of the Poland's best-loved painters kicked the bucket.
Jan Stanislawski, famous as much for his fantastic size as for his phenomenal skills with the brush, cast a colossal shadow over Cracow and beyond.
An immensely popular professor at the Art Academy here in Cracow, Stanislawski was one of the first Polish painters to take up the Impressionist style. His dreamy little landscapes were hugely influential on a generation of artists. Indeed, he spear-headed Poland's golden age in painting.
In tribute to the great man, the National Museum is organising an exhibition at the Szolajski House that will open this Saturday. A host of the artist's oils will be on show, as well as many sketches that have been dug out of the storerooms. One to watch out for if you're a culture vulture.
