Jacek Majchrowski has won a second term as Mayor of Cracow, beating off challenger Ryszard Terlecki by 20% of the vote.
Precise figures from yesterday's elections reveal that Mr Majchrowski won 59.57% as against Mr. Terlecki's 40.34%. There was a relatively modest 38.8 percent turnout.
However, the big upset of the evening came in Warsaw, where former Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz (46.82%) was defeated by Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz (53.18%). The turnout in the capital was considerably higher than Cracow, with 53% of eligible Varsovians posting their vote.
Mrs Gronkiewicz-Waltz's win reflected a strong day for centre-right party Platforma Obywatelska (PO), which took power in several major cities across Poland. Mrs Gronkiewicz-Waltz will be Warsaw's first ever female president.
