Explosion Brings Tragedy To Silesia

Rescue workers were struggling through the night yesterday after a Silesian coal-mine was rocked by an explosion.

Eight miners have already been pronounced dead as a result of Tuesday's disaster. Sadly, hopes to reach the remaining 15 miners are not strong.

The Halemba coal mine is situated at the heart of Silesia's industrial region. The mine is one of the oldest still in use, with work beginning there as far back as 1957. It is not the first fatal accident at the site.

The rescue operation itself was slowed yesterday owing to the threat of a second gas explosion.

Masses at churches in the nearby city of Ruda Slaska have been thronged as prayers were offered up to the miners and their families.
