Cracow lad races into the record-books

Cracovian racing-driver Robert Kubica has smashed all national records by becoming the first ever Pole to mount a Formula One podium.

21 year old motorman Kubica came in third at this Sunday's Italian Grand Prix. It was only his third ever race at top level, and his success has sent corks flying at BMW-Sauber, the Pole's home stable.

"Before the race some guys from the team came to me and told me they would like to see me on the podium" recalled the delighted Pole, "I thought it was a joke and now we are here."

Sunday's finish is doubly satisfying for Kubica, whose debut earlier this Summer at the Hungarian Grand Prix was marked by bad luck. After finishing in an impressive seventh position, he was later disqualified as his worn tyres had taken him below the official weight level.

As Cracow Life readers will already know, Kubica learnt his moves at none other than Kazimierz's eccentric go-karting hall. Budding racers know where to head for.
