Cracow Ace Disqualified!

I just don't know what it is when it comes to sport. Whenever we champion the achievements of some gallant ace, he or she - and sometimes an entire team - will lose catastrophically on the following day. Perhaps we've inadvertently cursed these ill-starred players. Of course, we don't flatter ourselves that we're actually capable of dabbling in the black arts, appealing as that idea sounds. But it just seems that whenever we toast something on the sporting scene, doom strikes immediately thereafter. It happened with ski-jumping celebrity Adam Malysz (the man who is better known as 'the flying moustache' or ' 'the Polish Batman'). It happened with Kasia Radwanska, quarter-finalist at this years Wimbledon. It happened with Poland's World Cup team several times over. In fact, the less said about that the better.

Just to add insult to injury, the moment we embraced the news last Friday that Cracovian motor star Robert Kubica was making Formula 1 history - he was the first Pole ever to compete in such a competition, finishing in a fine seventh place yesterday amongst the top jocks - lo, he was disqualified. Apparently his tyres were so worn down by the end of the race that his vehicle clocked in two kg below the required weight limit. We're considering that next time we'll simply not mention a sporting event until it's well and truly over. Perhaps then we might be pleasantly surprised. And you know, the funny thing is, by chance we didn't mention the second major sporting event that was due to take place last weekend. Indeed, many times Olympic medallist Otylia Jedrzejczak was squaring up for the final of the 200 metres front crawl at Budapest. It was an incredibly difficult comeback scenario in which the odds were stacked against her. The result? She won gold. We rest our case. If anyone out there wants to turn somebody into a frog, drop us a line, we may just be able to help.....
